Hey there! This Black History Month, the Dr. M.T. Pope House and City of Raleigh Museum are teaming up to celebrate African American Emancipation through education, business ownership, and civic engagement. We’ve got an exciting lineup of academic presentations and music lined up for you. Starting at 10 a.m., Dr. Brandi C. Brimmer will be discussing “Claiming Union Widowhood: Race, Respectability, and Poverty in the Post-Emancipation South.” Then, from 11 a.m. to noon, Marie Stark will take you on a journey through “Freedom Through Education: A Look at Shaw University’s Early Years.” Finally, from 1-2 p.m., Shenette Swann will be leading an audience-interactive musical performance. This program is generously supported by North Carolina Humanities, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. You can join us at the City of Raleigh Museum on Saturday, February 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s free and open to anyone aged 15 and up, so come on down and enjoy the festivities!
