The LGBTQIA+ Historic Context Study report is now available! Check out the final report or project summary to learn about some of Raleigh’s important LGBTQIA+ historic places like The Green Monkey that shutting it’s doors. The project provides a contextual overview of Raleigh’s LGBTQIA+ history and begins to document specific places important to that history. This study is the first of its kind in North Carolina.
The report includes:
- Brief contextual LGBTQIA+ history of Raleigh.
- Simplified list of places associated with Raleigh’s LGBTQIA+ communities.
- 20 site evaluations for potential local landmark designation.
- Suggestions for other possible recognition options.
- Recommendations for next steps and future research.
Join the project team at a community meeting to celebrate the completion of the report. City staff and the consultant, Cynthia de Miranda, will share details from the report and talk about potential next steps. Light refreshments will be served.
