Just months before the 2026 midterm elections, President Donald Trump has removed the remaining members of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC), leaving the independent federal agency without the quorum required to carry out many of its responsibilities. (⁠Reuters)

The bipartisan Election Assistance Commission was created by the Help America Vote Act of 2002 to help states improve election administration, certify voting systems, accredit voting equipment testing laboratories, and maintain the national voter registration form.

According to multiple reports, one Republican commissioner resigned while two Democratic commissioners were dismissed by the White House, leaving the agency unable to conduct official business until new commissioners are appointed and confirmed. (⁠Reuters)

The move comes as election officials across the country prepare for the November midterm elections and has sparked debate over the future of federal election oversight. Supporters of the administration argue the president has the authority to appoint new commissioners, while critics say the decision could disrupt election administration and reduce public confidence in the electoral process.
