Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway System is turning 50, and the city is marking the milestone with a packed October of rides, walks, volunteer days, and a look back at how the trail network took shape. If you’ve ever biked the Neuse River Greenway Trail or walked the Walnut Creek Greenway Trail, there’s something here for you.

Below is a guide to the biggest events. Dates and times come from the City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, so check the official event pages before you head out.


Biking and Running Events for Raleigh Greenways at 50

Cyclists and runners get the busiest lineup, with several rides hosted by local partners like Oaks and Spokes.

  • Light Up the Night Ride (Fri., Oct. 2, 7-9 p.m.): An evening ride starting at Kiwanis Park.
  • 50 Miles for 50 Years (Sun., Oct. 4, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.): Starts at Chavis Park, with one mile for each year.
  • Public Art Ride (Sun., Oct. 4, 2-4 p.m.): Rolls from the NC Museum of Art to Dix Park.
  • Bike the Greenway (Tue., Oct. 6, 9:30-11 a.m.): A morning ride with Raleigh Parks.
  • Green Line Commuter Bike Bus (Wed., Oct. 7, 7:30-9 a.m.): Leaves from Lockwood Park.
  • Greenway Run (Wed., Oct. 7, 6:30 p.m.): Hosted by Friends of the Raleigh Greenway and Fleet Feet.
  • Kidical Mass (Fri., Oct. 9, 4-5:30 p.m.): A family-friendly ride from Brentwood Park.
  • Lake Raleigh Ride and Bike Maintenance Class (Sun., Oct. 11): Maintenance class 10 a.m.-noon, ride noon-2 p.m.


Guided Nature Walks Along Raleigh’s Greenways

The greenways aren’t just paths, they’re gateways to natural areas. Naturalists from Raleigh’s Nature Preserves will lead guided walks to help you spot the plants, animals, and fungi living near your neighborhood trail:

  • Wilkerson Nature Preserve (Sat., Oct. 3, 4:30-6 p.m.)
  • Walnut Creek Wetland Park (Mon., Oct. 5, 9:30-10:30 a.m.)
  • Durant Nature Preserve (Tue., Oct. 6, 9:30-11 a.m.)
  • Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve (Wed., Oct. 7, 9:30-11 a.m.)

Registration is handled through the city’s recreation portal, so sign up early.


Walking Programs

Prefer a steady stroll? The Pathway to Parks walking program meets Tuesdays (Oct. 6-27) and Wednesdays (Oct. 7-Nov. 4) at 9:30 a.m. On Friday, Oct. 9 from 2-5 p.m., Dix Park and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences host ecoEXPLORE the Greenways.


Museum Exhibit, Lecture, and Anniversary Reception

History fans should head to the City of Raleigh Museum:

  • Pop-up exhibit: The Park with a City in It: 50 Years of the Raleigh Greenway System runs Oct. 2-22.
  • Lunchbox Lecture: The Capital Area Greenway: The Next 50 Years on Tue., Oct. 6, noon-1 p.m.
  • Anniversary reception and panel: Past, Present, and Future on Thu., Oct. 8, 5-7 p.m.

Give Back: Greenway Volunteer Events

Want to leave the trails better than you found them? Three volunteer days are planned:

  • Tree planting at Thornton Rd. (Fri., Oct. 9, 9 a.m.-noon)
  • Invasive plant removal at Walnut Creek Wetland Center (Sat., Oct. 10, 9 a.m.-noon)
  • Trail maintenance at Annie Louise Wilkerson Nature Preserve (Sat., Oct. 10, 10 a.m.-noon)


Commute Smart Greenway Pop-Ups

October is Pedestrian Safety Month, and Commute Smart Raleigh will hand out free swag to greenway users at these stops, all from 4:30-5:30 p.m.:

  • Lake Johnson (Tue., Oct. 13)
  • Anderson Point Park (Thu., Oct. 15)
  • North Hills Park (Tue., Oct. 20)
  • Walnut Creek Wetland Park (Thu., Oct. 22)
