Trump Accounts offer a way to save for children’s futures, but families of children with disabilities need to understand how those savings could affect Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Disability Scoop’s October 9 report, “Trump Accounts Could Put SSI At Risk,” highlights concerns that these accounts could jeopardize disability benefits without careful planning. The issue matters to Raleigh and Wake County families preparing for a child’s transition to adulthood.

Why Trump Accounts Can Affect SSI

Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts for children. A federal pilot program provides a $1,000 contribution for eligible children born between 2025 and 2028.

SSI is needs-based, with a general countable-resource limit of $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Certain assets are excluded.

According to Social Security Administration guidance, Trump Account balances are excluded during the account’s growth period. Beginning January 1 of the calendar year the beneficiary turns 18, the withdrawable value after any early-withdrawal penalty generally becomes countable, unless another exclusion applies.

The change can happen before the child’s 18th birthday. Combined with other countable assets, the account could put SSI eligibility at risk.

The Important ABLE Rollover Window

SSA guidance allows an eligible beneficiary’s Trump Account balance to be transferred directly into an ABLE account during the calendar year the child turns 17.

ABLE accounts provide savings protections for eligible people with disabilities. Up to $100,000 in an ABLE account is excluded from SSI resource counting, subject to applicable rules.

Families should confirm eligibility, transfer procedures and deadlines with the account providers and a qualified benefits adviser.

Why This Matters for Raleigh Families

Disability Scoop’s reporting also raises concerns about Medicaid coverage connected to SSI eligibility. Losing SSI could have consequences beyond the monthly payment, although the effect on healthcare coverage depends on individual circumstances and applicable rules.

For local families, reviewing the benefits implications early can help avoid a missed deadline during the transition to adulthood.
